Guess I'm going to have to pay for iCloud's expensive storage now. I wish Apple still made Time Capsule, because that thing was rock-solid and FAST. Do not recommend for use with Apple at all. It attempted to complete a single backup over 90 days (yes, I waited for it to finish a single backup for 3 months, just to see if it would complete), but never finished. It seemed to back things up for a few months, but then one day stopped being able to finish a backup. It *sort* of worked for a while, but was incredibly slow (as in, wait for 30 minutes for a Time Machine folder to appear). I bought this because it claims to be compatible with Apple's Time Machine. If there is anybody that knows how to disable this, I'd be happy to hear about it.Ĭompeting product (about the same price) Synology NAS DiskStation works like a champ! Backed up 500GB within a few hours, and has been rock-solid with Mac OS Big Sur using standard Time Machine backups. And I am told by Apollo this cannot be turned off! It's very annoying, because the unit stays on, running all the time. Given the fact that I have 2 TB of music files, this is going to take forever. No problems, but I do not like the fact that the unit up-loads everything to a "central server". The set-up was fairly easy, but I probably do not use the drive to its full potential. The unit makes no noise at all and stays very cool, so no worries there.Ī follow-up after using this drive for some time. They repeatedly "lost" several tracks on almost every album. This last is where other drives fell down. I then use the drive to "link" via wireless router to my ARIA music server, which has a limited storage option. I use this drive to transfer music files to from my PC in another room. So be aware of that if you need to use this as a networked Time Machine solution right away.Īfter many disappointments with other brands and models, finally a drive that fits my specific needs. I'd give this 5 stars (and may yet), but there's a bug in the firmware that prevents this from working as a Time Machine volume if you are running the latest macOS (10.13.4, High Sierra). IF it worked as promised, it would be a great buy but it doesn't, and the support seems clueless. Having no confidence that I would ever get this working, I've decided to return the unit. Their online support is obviously scripted, uninformed, and even contradictory. Promises Apollo Cloud 2 Duo has a simple setup process on the iPhone that just about anybody can handle, and is the closest thing weve seen yet to network storage as an appliance. They then pointed me to StackOverflow for a "fix", which I had already seen and tried (without success) before contacting their support in the first place. Revised: After being told by one Promise tech support staff member that the failed Time Machine support was a known issue, another insisted that there is no such known issue and Time Machine works fine. For those that don't encounter these errors, it looks like a useful device for the money - certainly cheaper and more secure than third-party cloud services. Still, I was able to do so, so I'm giving them a better rating (which I could do a half-star). But it shouldn't take a NASA Computer Engineer with console-analyzing skills to get an "appliance" like this running properly. Revised again: with no help from the (obviously contracted-out) "technical support" staff, I found work-arounds for the two errors that were preventing me (and, I assume, anyone else running macOS X 10.13.4 "High Sierra") from either mounting or using this as a Time Machine volume. The device seems to work well once you get past those hurdles. The new design was developed from the ground up to take advantage of the processing power of the new Apollo Cloud 2 Duo.P.S.
